Places You’ll See

Step inside the UNESCO World Heritage site of Harar Jugol, often referred to as the “fourth holiest city in Islam.” This intensive one-day journey is curated by Harar Figure Tour to provide an academic yet intimate look at the city’s unique architecture, religious harmony, and living history. As your official guide, Adisu will lead you through the labyrinth of 368 narrow alleyways to discover why Harar has remained a bastion of culture for over a thousand years.

Introduction

We will walk along the massive stone fortifications, discussing the defensive history of the city and the symbolic importance of the five original entrances that once controlled all trade in the Horn of Africa.

Beyond the history of the French poet, we explore the museum’s collection of rare 19th-century photographs and the intricate woodwork of this iconic merchant house.

A walk through the Magala Gudo market. Here, Adisu will introduce you to the local spice traders, basket weavers, and the famous Harari silver smiths.

Enjoy a meal in a traditional Adare (Harari) house. You will learn about the unique interior design, where every niche in the wall (Taqet) and every rug on the floor has a specific social meaning.

Afternoon visit to the city’s spiritual landmarks. We visit the Jamia Mosque (the Great Mosque) and two other historic shrines, discussing the peaceful coexistence of the diverse communities within the walls.

We conclude the day with a formal Harar Coffee Ceremony. As a graduate of tourism and business, Adisu will provide a closing talk on the modern economy of Harar and its future as a global heritage site.
